該品為薄菏油中得到的一種飽和的環(huán)狀醇。又名薄荷醇、薄荷冰。易燃，燃燒充分，燃燒中無煙。該品為無色針狀或棱柱狀結(jié)晶或白色結(jié)晶性粉末；有薄荷的特殊香氣，味初灼熱后清涼；乙醇溶液顯中性反應(yīng)。本品在乙醇、氯仿、乙醚、液狀石蠟或揮發(fā)油中極易溶解，在水中極微溶解。
性質(zhì)與穩(wěn)定性編輯
1. 左旋的為無色針狀結(jié)晶。溶于乙醇，與油類互溶。具有涼的、清鮮的、愉快的薄荷特征香氣，帶甜的尖刺氣。給人以冷的感覺，香氣透發(fā)，但不夠持久。口味亦是鮮清甜的涼味。
2. 存在于烤煙煙葉、香料煙煙葉、主流煙氣中。
3. 天然存在于椒樣薄荷油、日本薄荷油中，少量存在于香葉油等精油中。
4. 共有12中異構(gòu)體。
5. 普通的晶體表面有微量的液體油和極微量的不揮發(fā)物，合成的薄荷醇是各種異構(gòu)體的混合物。
6.有一定毒性、刺激性和過敏性反應(yīng)。 [2]

主要用途編輯
1.薄荷腦和消旋薄荷腦均用作牙膏、香水、飲料和糖果等的賦香劑。在醫(yī)藥上用作刺激藥，作用于皮膚或粘膜，有清涼止癢作用；內(nèi)服可作為驅(qū)風(fēng)藥，用于頭痛及鼻、咽、喉炎癥等。其酯用于香料和藥物。在世界上，我國和巴西是主要的天然薄荷生產(chǎn)園，薄荷油的年產(chǎn)量均達到2000-3000t。
2.廣泛用于日用香精、食用香精、煙用香精。一般在口香糖中1100mg/kg；糖果中400mg/kg；烘烤食品中130mg/kg；冰淇淋68mg/kg；軟飲料中35mg/kg。
3. 有殺菌和防腐作用。
4.用作療效性化妝品的特殊添加劑。用于花露水等。亦可用作牙膏、香水、飲料和糖果等的賦香劑。用于制糖果、飲料、香料及藥用
